Thanks for the imput. I'm not so much into the shot gun case idea, most of the ones I find are long enought to store flagpoles in, and I dislike the extra length, especially when I gig, as I have a 5 string violin, mandolin, tenor banjo, trumpet case full of whistles, bodhran, accordion, and sound equipment to attend with already. (I'll be the first to say I'm a collector... :D ) I'd "take the viola out behind the toolshed and show it a ting or two", but the members of the symphony wouldn't be too pleased. Well, ok, in all fairness, maybe they would  Not to mention the big fiddle was the first one I made myself.

"breakdown shotgun cases" are not particularly long - about 35" I believe.

Correct... and that's about 3" shorter than a half set!

I have a breakdown shotgun case that is aprox 36" long x 9" wide x 6" deep.
It's a little heavy for my liking, but maybe that's why I'm so strong! :D

It fits my full Gallagher D set (my bass regulator wraps around...so that helps) with a bunch of other stuff too (whistles, small tool kit, etc…).

Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

If I were a set of pipes I would want to live in Cap'n Morgan's pipecase. It is a good size (for a heavy-duty case) and he has customized it to a T. Dan, you could go pro any day

Thanks, Tommykleen, I could probably make it fit you...but I don't know if I could squeeze your mojo in too....besides, that's not something I want to be caught carrying around!

???

My half set is 30" long with the bass drone slide pushed in.
Remove the bass drone slide (a reasonably normal thing to do, when putting a set in its case), and it's only 27".

Even a full set with non-detachable bass bar should fit in a 35" case - including C# and C sets. Maybe a B set with non-detachable bass bar would be difficult, without removing the baritone slide as well.

Well, here's me overlooking the "breakdown" word! :boggle:

That's a great idea, now that I am seeing what is really being said, and not what my mind saw... creepy.

Is there a 'brand of choice' for the breakdown cases, or should I scouer my local outdoorsy store for one? The aluminum sided ones seem like they'd be nice and sturdy

I have a hard case to keep the pipes protected. It is actually a shakuhachi case that happens to be a perfect fit for the pipes.

I use a Ritter tenor saxophone bag for shorter journeys.

Image

It fits the pipes very well and it has many pockets for ding dangs and doo whippies.
I keep my chanters in GHB practice chanter soft cases, which fit snugly into the long pocket on the side of the bag. In addition to a handle to carry it like a sports bag, it has shoulder straps like a ruck sack.

The bag is light, strong, water-proof and people realise it is a musical instrument and treat it with care.
A soft bag may not be for everyone, but I'm very pleased with it.

Bill, the cases I was looking at were about 34" clear inside and 4" high. At the time, I owned a Childress full set and it was too long to fit. If I recall, I would have had to unplug the entire bass drone to make things work. Also the hose had to be removed from the bellows fitting.
