What a great tionol!

A forum about Uilleann (Irish) pipes and the surly people who play them.

I like it too...I have to ask Bob to make me one one of these days.

Great tionol, everyone! Thanks to all the SoCal pipers, especially Gabriel and his family. I am really enjoying my reed, newly improved by Benedict. :D

Somehow I ended up getting a B Burke whistle too...I purposely stayed away from temptation for most of the weekend, but then on Sunday evening, Joey said "Justine, try this whistle," and I was doomed. :P (I'm enjoying the whistle, too).

Mike,

We're still working on plans for the SF tionol. I don't think I should say anything just yet. I'll post something here when there's something to announce.

I don't know if I met this Tom...I met Tommykleen, though, and he does look like his avatar. ( Does he still have that one with the lemur?) :P It was great to meet some of you in real life, anyway.

Nice to see so many San Diegans here this year, too.

Hey, check out my avatar! Thanks for the help, Bob!

(I guess it doesn't look like me in real life, except maybe the hair). :)

Alas, I don't look like my avator. I was the older, short, bald dude with the K&Q half set. I was in your class and was admittly the crappiest piper in that group. I sat next to Joey.

I hope you got your reed fixed up. You sounded like you are doing well on UP, even with that out-of-tune reed. Keep playing, you sound great.

Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

Hey Tommy -

Do you know a woman that plays ITM flute in your area that works as a librarian at a local college? She borrowed a penny chanter from me. I was wondering if she ever fired it up and started learning.

Michael - you must be referring to another Tom. I only had my Seery and my McGee flute with me at the tionol.

Oh, I think you used to have a different one. Didn't you have one that was a cute little monkey with big eyes? (I hope I'm not offending you!)

The current one must be Seamus Ennis, right?

That's MISTER cute little monkey with big eyes to you!

That avatar was a picture of an aye-aye: nature's most amazing animal.

Check them out at the SF Zoo. The only place in N.America where you can see them in public. Your mind will be blown. Guaranteed.

tap-tap-tap.

Oh, I remember you now. I think you sounded pretty good yourself, as I recall. :) I thought it was a good class because we were all pretty much at the same level. Did the class meet on Sunday or not?

Yes, Benedict fixed up my reed good as new! :D (Tears of joy were shed). I am still getting used to playing it the way it is now...the reed is harder now, and the pressure is different than before for different notes, especially the back D.

BTW, are you saying you WANT to look like Mongo!!!??? :o

Justine -

I got a brand new reed from BK as well. It is a tad hard, but I figure you have to break it in. Just keep playing it, it should settle in.

OK, maybe the Mongo thing is getting old.....but Mongo only pawn in game of life.....
