Portable Piper's Chair

Post by misterpatrick »

Hello all,

at our recent tionól, we had a very informative regulator workshop with Ivan Goff who stressed the importance of having a chair at the correct height. As I've been doing some busking recently, I was curious what other have used as chairs/stools that are both portable and of the right height or adjustable. I've usually just dragged a folding Ikea chair along with me which while the right height, isn't that easy to haul. I've looked at camp stools but they all appear too short or make you lean backwards.

Thought it might make for interesting discussion.

Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

And now there was no doubt that the trees were really moving - moving in and out through one another as if in a complicated country dance. ('And I suppose,' thought Lucy, 'when trees dance, it must be a very, very country dance indeed.')

I wonder if the author of the blog got permission from Mr. Rogge before using his photo.

I was always envious of the accordion player in our band because he always had a place to sit no matter where we were- his accordion case! He played a huge piano accordion and the case made a perfect seat.

I've thought about how nice it would be if an uilleann case could double as a seat. It could have four little feet on one end and a pad on the other end.

"four little feet on one end and a pad on the other end."
Do you mean an Irishman on the other end?

what I'd much more like to see, is for some enterprising soul to finally& conclusively figure out how John Doran had his pipes rigged to play while standing up! the few pictures are so tantalizing. :P
failing that, there's always "Mr Bar Stool". 1000's in stock.

I went to the local music shop (the one's where they sell all the equipment that will make you a famous rock-n-roll star :P ) and tried several of the folding drummer's seats until I found one the correct height.
If you want to stand while playing, all you need is a prop that will get the upper part of your leg that your drones (and regs for you rich folk) rest upon, at the right height. Something that would give you that Captain Morgan (at 0:29 in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6UtavgBymeE) stance  Although, with some of the hunched positions I've seen people play while seated, putting your upper body in this position while standing will produce a dangerous number of falls :D

PERFECT! The upside being your chanter will be at ear level for all the other musicians so they can easily hear all your hard work :P

Looks like plenty of pockets for pints and spare parts in that chair, Uilliam!
Lots of leg room and space to hang the drones thru the sides too.
Might need a step ladder to help folding it up tho!
