Blow pipe tube

Post by fel bautista »

Anyone know what David Quinn uses for blow pipe material? I saw Tom Klein's set at the Seattle tionol and it looks like surgical tubing. Anyone know for sure? Its flexible, doesn't stain your clothes like a black rubber hose.

Yes, it's latex on Tom 's set.

The hose on my pipes is black and doesn't stain my clothes. It is a soft, restraining yet flexible, rubber similar to latex. It may be black latex I suppose?

Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

[fib] I got mine from a "gig" I did in a Turkish prison in 70s [/fib]. But I bet I can find an easier way for you to get the same.

I don't know what David Quinn uses but my full set had black heater hose on it and I had it changed to the same size hose only made of Silicone.

You can get it at any Hydrolic hose place that MAKES hydrolic hose.. take the other one with you for size. Its far more flexible and does not mark.

Here's a photo of my bellows in production alongside David's own bellows with the same latex tube.... BOI-N-N-N-G-G-G-G-G-G-G--G-G-G!

...and mine, later in production, with the black hose of contrition.....

Ask and you shall receive. Here's a source for the tubing. Be sure and check what diameter you need.

You might go to the alley behind the bike shop, look in the dumpster, grab an old discarded innertube and cut whatever length you want out of it. Avoid using the section with the hole in it.

Bill Thomas used to make his blow pipe tubes from bicycle tubes.

Actually that link fom Mcmaster Car is not the correct tubing. in the above image where you see the rubber tubing that is the tubing he uses. then he covers it with leather glued along one seam with rubber cement. and if you find some of that large diameter surgical tubing I'd love to know where myself. I'd like to switch my other bellows over to the same.

OOH wait.. I just double checked that link and it is the right stuff. it comes in the amber/clear color as well. Sorry. well now I'm going to have to order some.

My DMQ bellows blowpipe is leather (kinky!).

PS--just to clarify, the "kinky" reference is a poor attempt at humor--the leather blowpipe works very well indeed and is not subject to kinking.

The blow tube on my 1980 David Quinn bellows appears to be bicycle innertube. It's nice and flexible but that is also it's drawback, as it kinks easily.

I also use bicycle innertube for the blow pipe - its flexible and cheap. To keep it from kinking I insert a sliced up garden hose. It still remains very flexible without the kinkiness. For illustration of the "slicing" of the hose :

Kevin Corkery came up with the very good idea of using a plastic spiral book binder as a solution for blowpipe kinking. Works like a charm, costs 10 cents.
