SF Bay Area Piping

Post by glands »

Sooooooo....what's going on in the SF bay area with regards to pipering. Regular meetings? Sessions? Everybody doing their own thing until the tionol every two years? What's the scoop on the action? I'm moving to SF in a few mos and I wanna get together with pipers on a fairly regular and frequent basis. I think I know most of the players there....but, what's happenin'?

Hey Lewis my old friend.

We will finally get to play together again. It's been a long time.

We have a pipers' meeting every month a different locations. There are also some local sessions you could attend.

Check out the SF Pipers' website for details at: http://www.sfpipersclub.org/

I live in San Jose some 45 miles south of San Francisco. You played here once at the King's Head session with me years ago if you remember.

When are you moving here?

PM me and I will give you my contact info.

Cheers! Richard

My home will be opened as a regular meeting locale but not yet sure where my place will be.....99% sure I'm gonna live in SF county.

I will probably be starting at UCSF in April, or at the very latest, May. Finalizing plans and already working on strategic program building and practice plan for them. Exciting job!

Richard, looking forward to seeing you again. I remember well the sesion, even remember the specifics of our conversations, some of the other musicians, your performance on the GHB's on stage, etc. A most memorable nite. Write me glands@comcast.net as it will be easier to retain your contact info that way rather than going thru pm.

I seem to remember that Jack Gilder runs a session in downtown SF. You might drop in on him and surprise him. Was it at the Plough & Stars?

I'd say the piping scene in SF varies. It has been a little quiet lately. And now our club president (feadogin) is on maternity leave.... (Hey, now that baby Eoghan has moved out of the way of the blowpipe, maybe she can play the pipes again :D)

If you only get together every month or two, it's pretty tough to really get to know anyone, much less learn tunes that you can play together. A few years ago, Conall O'Raghallaigh led a small class for beginners that met every week. That was fantastic! Besides getting me started with the piping, meeting every week meant that I got to know everyone much better. For the last 2 years, some of us in the south bay have been leading a slow session that meets every week in Palo Alto. I haven't managed to get up to the city for sessions in quite a while, but I'd like to do that more often.

I was kidding when I asked you before about meeting at your place, but if you're open to that, it would be a big help, since we've been lacking a good central meeting place. We've been trying to meet in pipers' homes to give our meetings a more relaxed atmosphere than we can get in a conference room somewhere, but we don't have anyone who lives in SF with a big enough place to meet. It takes almost 3 hours to drive from one end of the bay area (Richard) to the other (Ted), so a central location makes a big difference.

In any case, your arrival here will certainly help boost the energy level in our piping scene, and I'm looking forward to that.

So Lewis, any chance of harboring a Floridian resident as a boarder for a few months, or more? I could pay my way through making some reeds or maybe even by cooking for your family my own personal recipe for a 7 cheese Lasagna, at any time you desire it to be made. :D  :)

Hey, its only like a 600 mile drive down to San Diego... Of course for you that's only what, about 7 hours?

Michael....if I were permitted to drive it there wide out....3.59 hrs from my future home to yours! Wonder how fast it'd go thru a tank of gaoline at 167mph???

Joe..... a Floridian would never survive in 60F fog. On the other hand the fog is possibly why there were The Grateful Dead, Ginsburg, and Beatnicks. Your reeds might become psychedelic and far out man. :poke:

Brian...... all kidding aside, my home will likely mirror Gabys home as far as pipering is concerned. Anyways, will be hoping to create some energy in piping there. I wanna see Ted Anderson again! I feed off playing with other pipers on a regular basis. Gotta do it.

The Tionol is on. I was surprised it wasn't on Page One. Maybe they have all the sign-ups they need.

[event]

No non-pipe classes and such this time. I'm at another conference across the Bay this time, but I highly recommend the concerts and the event. What a nice bunch of people they are. I went to the last one and had a great time, especially the Sat. night party...

Page one! Yes, it should be on page one. I was planning to do that but got distracted and totally forgot. I'll try to do it this weekend.

The tionol registrations are starting to roll in, but there is plenty more room. The early registration discount only lasts for a few more weeks, so get those checks in soon!

Sorry about not having any classes except for pipes. It's not that we don't like you or anything like that. Last time the whistle and flute classes kind of got squeezed for space, and we thought it was better to drop them for now than to repeat them with the same problems. Non-pipers are certainly welcome to attend the concert on Saturday night, and you can still come hang out with us just for fun.

Drop by for some of it if you can, Weeks; it should be another great tionol!

And it will be baby's first tionol so it'll be extra special. :)
