How do you like your brass

Post by PJ »

On the various bits of brass (chanter top, keys, drones/regs, etc), do you prefer them to be shiny and new-looking or tarnished and old-looking?

Tarnished. But it depends on the mounts too. If the mounts look too plastic-y, then shiny is better. If they look more like real bone or ivory, then tarnished gives it that antique look. But antique-looking brass with plastic-looking mounts doesn't seem right, so if your mountsd are shiny, then the brass should be shiny- just my aesthetic opinion.

BTW, apparently nickel-silver is a type of brass, in that case, I like it shiny.

Cheers,

I like mine just fine tarnished. I'd like them to be nice and shiny all
the time, but who has time to keep them polished. I'd rather be
playing than polishing! :D

Shiny looks nice, but is a lot of work. After each day/session one can polish the stuff and do it over and over again. So either you spend hours for polishing instead of piping or you just let nature rule!
It's against any physical law anyway that brass should be shiny ... :P
P.S.: It's a shame that noone has yet tried to use electrostatic varnishing (or whatever they use for other brass instruments) on pipe's brass parts. That would keep the stuff shiny ...

Well, it may be the time in the Navy, but I tend to keep em' shiny using the same stuff I used in the Navy: "NeverDull".

Great stuff, & it doesn't take a lot of work either..

My first choice is to have my brass be chrome plated!

Second choice is shiny, definitely using Never Dull as suggested above.

Shiny...
it shows your pride for an expensive well kept set of pipes, unlike dull patina and tarnished like a 1950's 'bluesman' with a beat-up old guitar...

Tell us something.: I am interested in the uilleann pipes and their typical -and broader- use. I have been composing and arranging for the instrument lately. I enjoy unusual harmonic combinations on the pipes. I use the pipes to play music of other cultures.

I don't get it. Didn't the Taylor Bros. work only in nickel silver?
