Re: The limerick piper painting
Martin is a fine painter alright ,but seems to be mostly stuck in some kind of time warp. I'd like to see an artist of his talent reflect his own times not his grandfathers.
Heres a painting of Owen Duignan which is on the wall of "An Droicead Beag"(the small bridge)pub in Dingle,Co Kerry.

I like his painting of the piper. He paints pictures of the Ireland that I remember. Those days and lifestyles are probably disappearing rapidly.

Reviving this thread on piping artwork.
I recently purchased this piece at auction to add to my collection. Not a copy of The Limerick Piper (1841), although painted around the same time. A lovely original watercolour by Cork-born artist William Henry Stopford (1842-1890). Dated and signed 1863. Titled 'The Bagpiper and His Faithful Hound'.

Re: The limerick piper painting
Another recent auction acquisition. Nice old engraving of a union piper playing to a family. I'm guessing it's a late 19th or early 20th century print.
Brian Vallely informs me that the engraving is based on a famous painting - The Irish Piper (1847) by Frederick Goodall - that is currently hanging in a museum in Armagh, on loan from the National Gallery in London. I'll look forward to viewing the original when I am at the Kennedy Festival in November.
An image of the original Goodall paining kindly provided to me by Brian.

Re: The limerick piper painting
I love the editorial interventions the engraver has made there. Very telling.

Re: The limerick piper painting
Martin Driscol passed some years ago. He painted many of his paintings on a commission basis, based on photos that people provided him to paint. He had a reputation of painting traditional irish scenes and did that very well. So, most certainly that became his specialty because of such demand.
