Transposing ABC

Post by PJ »

Is there a quick fix for transposing tunes in ABC from, say, the key of D to the key of G ?

I'm trying to learn a tune on the pipes. It's in D but it goes down to the G below middle C. I have to bring it up to G to be able to play it on the pipes.

Any suggestions?

On a mac i use easyabc. Sometimes i will use easy abc to convert it to a midi file and then work with it in sibelius.

Melody Assistant, from myriad-online.com will read and write abc format. It transposes and does many other music functions as well.

There used to be several online sites that did this. Here's one that seems to work; just enter +5 semitones to transpose from D to G.

Not necessarily, Rory. Depends on the compass and tessitura of the tune, and whether the melody is plagal or authentic.

A plagal fiddle tune in D that runs, say, between [G,] and [c] and mostly in the 1st octave of that range might work better in G with a range between [D] and [g] without folding the heck out of it, unless it's only a few notes that need to be folded.

Maybe PJ will tell us the mystery tune. :-)

Hi MTGuru

A tune in D going down to G sounds like it is a Scottish pipe tune to me.
