recording

Post by gentlemanpiper »

been trying very hard to get some tunes down on 'tape' - so very hard to get anything worth listening to, just brings home all the flaws in the piping: too fast, too messy, very frustrating

if I can i'll post some in the next day or two so brace yourselves

Mostly the first, which is largely the reason for the other two. Whoa ... slow down.

Your basic technique seems like it's there or getting there. But on those clips you're definitely playing at or past the speed limit of your ability. You're both dropping beats and adding extra beats as you go along. Sometimes as a listener I can't even find your beat. The overall effect is a bit queasy and unmusical.

When 100% of your concentration is on just keeping your fingers moving, there's no attention left to think about phrasing, timing, articulation and musicality. Slow down to 80-100 on those reels for now, instead of the 120 or so you're pushing against.

I don't usually recommend metronome practice. But ... do you have a metronome?

By all means! Don't get discouraged. If you slow things down to your comfort zone, what you're doing has the potential to sound very good.

Not a rhetorical question. Do you have a metronome?

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

Me neither. The only file left up there is marked Non-playable.

I feel like The Little Prince ... I wonder if he has a metronome.
