which type of flute is used in this song?

Post by wastzzz »

Hi everybody, this is my first post here.
I'm kinda ignorant about flutes since I am a guitar player mainly..
I'd need some help determining which type of flute is played in this song.. I just like it a lot and I'd love to get one asap :)
You can listen to the songs here:

1. http://files-upload.com/files/439058/sadness_sorrow.mp3
2. http://files-upload.com/files/439065/raising.mp3

Regards,
Max.

So no one else has to wait for the stupid countdown:
http://8.download-1.files-upload.com/50 ... aising.mp3
http://4.download-1.files-upload.com/50 ... sorrow.mp3

;)

Anyway, it sounds like a regular ol' flute to me.

wastzzz, if you ended up on this forum via google, you may not
realize that this is a predominately Irish flute forum. The flutes
used in Irish music are mainly a type of simple-system flute,
usually made of wood with conical bore. So, most of the people
on this forum are most familiar with that type of flute. The mp3s
you posted do not seem to feature an Irish flute, so withak is
trying to say that the flute you're hearing is probably a regular
metal Boehm flute, like you'd find in a school band room. Now,
of course, you could differentiate between brands of metal Boehm
flutes, but we don't do that very often here, as it's not the focus
of the forum. Though maybe someone with more expertise in the
area will come along soon...

withak, I don't know if I completely agree, though. That flute
sounds awfully reedy for a regular old Boehm. Though I guess,
as always, that could be the player... Might it be a dizi? I'm not
familiar enough with Asian flutes to guess...

Don't run off, though. There are people here with a lot of varying
interests. I know some folks have experimented with Asian winds,
maybe they could lead you down the right path if it turns out to be
one of those. It does have a slightly unusual sound in those clips.

I thought it sounded a little odd also, but figured it was just the recording/production. Those tracks don't provide the best flute listening environment. ;) I'll bet you could get that sound out of a Boehm flute if you tried though.

I also recommend waiting around until someone who knows what they are talking about shows up. :)

If you're referring to withak's links, then try the ones in the original post.

To me, this doesn't sound like a Boehm-system flute at all.

I think this is a quena:
