Reviol - the Beast is on the way

Post by tommyk »

I love my Reviol flute.
The first flute I ever cannot sell.
So, I've taken the plunge and had him add keys.
Black chrome and stunning.
Here are ten photos of mine, plus some others of some of Maurice's other work:

http://www.reviol.co.nz/HTML/Thumbnails.html

I am a "never going back" convert to the Cn thumbholes (much more accurate than cross-fingering, another finger directly controlling the hole, comfortable reach, and the only truly accurate way to get a high octave Cn).
So, the keys might look a bit different from what flute-players are accustomed to seeing.

This man does staggeringly beautiful work.

Gorgeous!

I'm waiting impatiently, Maurice is going to send me his "loaner" to try out, to see if I can handle the stretch/hole size. If I can, then I'm going to be working out a purchase of a C footed, 8 key in Satine with black keywork.

Now I just have to wait for him to finish the upgrade he's working on, so the person with the flute sends it back. (If that's you, get off your arse! :D :D :D)

That IS me! I thought he'd said Texas, but this rings true.
Funny thing is, this past week was my Spring Break from college (I teach).
I spent four nights and five days lying on the living room floor unable to move - it's not my arse, t'is m' lower back - degenerative disc.

But that's not why; I need one for my gig this Saturday. I'll send it off to you next Monday, promise (and I'm serious)!

email me at home and I'll tell you more about the loaner and his flutes (and I get no kickbacks!):

The eight-keyed Satiné flute also visible in his gallery should be my new flute. :)

I am really interested in his flutes. Would you be willing to give me some information on them as well?

Not that I'm the end-all in flute knowledge (haven't played them all); let's see, that at least used to be Jessie(fish).

But happy to - what would you like to know?

Tommy-

Dropped you a note via email, if you didn't get it, check your spam filter. It's coming from a gmail account.

Casey-

When I get the loaner flute, I'll give you my (albeit newish) opinion after I've played it a bit as well. His flutes look stupendous, can't wait to try it out.

Ah, no. She sitteth in U.S. Customs.
She probably won't make it here by my Saturday gig; sigh.

Yeah, but could you play it "in" in time to play it for a full gig? Or is this just adding keywork to a previously keyless?

Correct - just adding keywork to an extant instrument.

I just saw the pics on Maurice's site. Gorgeous flute! I love the cabachon that you had put on the end piece. Hopefully it will get there in time.

I've considered putting some accents on the M&E I play out at Ren Faires, got a nice price on some lab grown amethysts, and I also found a perfectly sized celtic knot carving for the end cap. Just not sure about how it would finally look.

I'm jealous of the flute.

The silver piece was from MacManus & Sons in Berkeley and Maurice surrounded it with a paua inlay. Amazing work on both accounts.

Piffle on you too. Satine 8 key I believe is what I'm going to get, assuming I can handle the finger holes. (It's less than a Pratten, so I should be able to, but we'll see).

::ahem:: JUST WAITING ON TOMMY...::ahem::

Heh. Sorry. I'm not always a patient person. :D

frackin US customs anyway...
