Tell us something.: Ready to be a decent flute player again! I took a break of about 17 years and it's been way too long.

Go get this CD! "Farewell to Evening Dances"

Today I stayed home from work, feeling bad this morning upon wake up. I didnt realize that the Cd I just ordered on Monday would be here this soon, and to my great delight, this Cd from Colm O'Donnell arrived.

MAN!!! It is so good. I cant get over how lovely each and every track is, and it's got 18 tracks on it. Just now finished listening to it for the second time, and it had many, many tunes Ive never heard. For a sample, go to amazon and look it up. There's also a review posted there by Jessie K.

Oh man, Colm O'Donnell is a genius. Beautiful sound too. One of my favourites. Also check his track in the "Celtic Mouth Music" CD.

I like this CD, too. My only complaint is the production; I think it'd be better if the sound were a bit more raw, and less reverb-y. The songs and tunes are great, though.

Colm's CD is a fine thing.

However, for pure ballsiness and technique, my favorites of late have been Conal O'Grada's "Top of Coom" and Harry Bradley's two solo albums. Much more straight-ahead, ripping stuff, to my mind. I listen to Colm's album late at night, when in a sleepy, contemplative mood (which is not a bad thing). Bradley and O'Grada? Those guys'd keep me up nights, if I listened to them too late!

Paul McGrattan is a good name to watch for, too. Fine player. And Tansey, too. Lots of good stuff out there, thankfully.

Still, Colm's is a worthy album. I'd still like to hear him without all the reverb and stuff, though.

But how 'bout that bodhran song? That's a fun bit, eh?

I've heard this album and would definitely prefer it without the reverb thats for sure. There's some very nice singing and lilting on it though, and thats the highlight of the album for me.

You can hear a few more tracks of Colm O'Donnell's playing, without the reverb, on The Mountain Road, an excellent sampler of traditional musicians from South Sligo:

This is probably closer to what his flute actually sounds like. I think he has a duet on there with his brother as well...I can't check at the moment as there's someone sleeping in the room where all my CDs are stored. :)

i just want to add one more excellent cd with colm involved on it. it is with group erne:traditional irish music. other members are cathal hayden, jim mcgrath, gerry o'donnel and tommy o'sullivan. his solo version of paddy rambles in the park ( or through the park) is gorgeous ( i preffer his version more than mcgratton version on his last cd.) and lot good sets, and singing from colm!
one correction: on the mountain road cd is only one track with colm, jig the besom in bloom with seamus quinn on piano.
second correction:tradman, on your list of cd's you misspell ( as brian i think) name of my good friend bill ( wiliam) dennehy, fiddler from san francisco.his album with piper tod dennman is great, althought not so known.
sorry for those corections, marin

Right you are, Colm appears on one track on The Mountain Road, and his brother Seamus on another. I knew they were both on there, but thought they were playing together....I must be confusing that with a track on Farewell to Evening Dances.
