Name that flute player

Post by kenny »

Here's a bit of fun. I've been posting on Youtube a few recordings I made at the All-Ireland Fleadh in Buncrana, Co. Donegal in 1976, and came across this video, from a year earlier, 1975 :
There's a young flute player playing "The Bucks Of Oranmore" at 3m 13 secs. I'm fairly certain I know who he was - anyone care to take a guess ?

I had been weighing 'possibles' but initially ruled him out on age grounds. He was fourteen in 1975.. :tomato:

That would be right, Mr.G. His name is in the 1976 programme as winner of both flute AND whistle in the 11 - 14 age group from the previous year, ie 1975. He won the 14 - 16 flute competition in 1976, and as I recall, got a standing ovation for his performance, the only time I've ever seen that in any competition. Mind you, maybe there was a bus load up from Cork that year ?
