The Rainey's and flute playing?

Post by Steampacket »

Listening to the Rainey's CD recently I wondered if there are any field recordings of their fiddle and flute playing archived anywhere? Prehaps Knowland was the only person to record them? One of the brothers played the flute, and it would be interesting to hear the style of flute playing. There are recordings of Irish Travellers playing the pipes and fiddle, and singing of course, but I have not heard any flute playing. The Rainey's twin fiddling was unique, so I suspect the flute playing was too.

Did you look at the ITMA catalogue? The Knowland collection is more extensive than what went onto the CD.

I did a rummage around at home, the old lp Alen McWeeney produced of traveller music has some whistle playing but no flute. The CD with his book has one fluteplayer: Mick Moriarty, who used to post here and on thesession. Can't immediately think of other traveller flute players.

Another recording (just audio) with Mick on tin whistle:
