Variation on LH piper hold thumb position

Post by norseman »

I’m getting back into Irish flute playing after years of hiatus on other instruments. I’ve tried all the options for LH and piper hold is the most natural and relaxing for me. One thing I’ve tried recently is a variation on thumb position with piper hold. Instead of sticking the thumb out like a hitchhiker, I bend the tip joint forward and tuck it under the flute. It keeps the rest of the thumb straight in line with the fingers and relaxes the fingers. I haven’t seen anyone else do this on You Tube, but it’s not always easy to see thumb position.

Other than the base of my thumb being a little sore while I’m getting used to it, I don’t think there should be any long term issues with this thumb position. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks
Bob
Failure is NOT an option - it comes bundled with the software.
