Delrin comes under the heading of GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe). Additionally it is Polyoxymethylene, noted for its inherent stiffness and dimensional stability. There is no need to add phthalates to it to increase stiffness as is the case with PVC, and other resin based plastics.

Delrin will put off formaldehyde, but requires a really high temperature. I suppose you don't want any of these things in a bad house fire.

In a bad house fire your plywood, chipboard, particle board furniture, MDF, will ALL give off formaldehyde and other toxic fumes. :boggle: As well as getting yerself and family outta there, you might rescue the family pooch and then mebbe yer Delrin flute.

If I can tag onto the subject here...

What about phthalates in epoxy resin? Some wooden flutes are stabilized with an epoxy layer interior, and of course there is resin in a carbon fiber flute. A quick Google indicates that phthalates might be present in some epoxy resins. You wouldn't be ingesting it directly with either design, and I guess if it's fully cured it's not going to emit any particles like food heated in plastic containers.

Just wondering because I'm about to get my first carbon fiber flute. :o

A true epoxy doesn't contain phthalates. But as you say, there are some resins out there that do contain phthalates. It's unusual, but not unheard of.
