New CD : Liam Kelly - music of John McKenna

Post by kenny »

I just posted this over on "thesession.org" - should also be of interest here.

This one seems to have slipped below the radar, released a few months back, but no mention here yet.
Liam Kelly of "Dervish" has made a CD of music recorded in the USA in the 1920s-1930s by Leitrim flute player John McKenna.
2 unique and interesting facets of this recording are that it was recorded in John McKenna’s homestead on Tents Mountain, Tarmon, close to the village of Drumkeeran, with Liam playing John McKenna’s original Concert ‘D’ flute.
I have actually played a few notes on that flute myself - it was handed round for inspection at a Cruinniu in Ballyvourney a few years back, after Hammy Hamilton had carried out an excellent piece of restoration work on the instrument.

My thanks to Aberdeen flute player John Crawford for bringing this recording to my attention.
