Tell us something.: I have just picked up an old wooden flute at a online auction, and am interested in knowing what it is that I have bought and how to refurbish and play it. (I play a conventional silver flute.)

What have I bought?

Post by mal wood »

Hi everyone,
I have just bought a wooden flute through the local auction site, but I don't know quite what it is or its age. Can I crowd-source your wisdom? If the flute is any good, I'll refurbish it and have a crack at playing it. (I play a modern silver flute with a wooden head.)

The image is from the auction site. With a bit of luck, I'll take delivery this week.
Hope you are all staying safe.

First things first. We need some measurements. Terry McGee has an excellent guide to lengths/pitches.http://www.mcgee-flutes.com/flutelengths.htm
The picture looks promising, but we need measurements.

Many thanks Bob. That's really useful -- and not something I would have found. I'll post again when the thing arrives.

Looks to be an unstamped German "nach Meyer" eight key simple system flute. Not especially sought after for playing Irish traditional music though

Yup, nach Meyer style German flute, made any time between c1870-1940. See also "Meyer and "Nach Meyer" flutes" http://www.oldflutes.com/articles/meyer.htm

I guess that was to be expected – it's coming from provincial New Zealand, so the date and the back story all fit. I paid about US$200. No Antiques Road Show story unfortunately. Now we'll see how playable it is. Huge thanks to the forum.
