A little late, but to cast a little light on the ´style´ subject.

This, to me, is perhaps one of the greatest examples of 'northern-style' flute playing ever recorded. Aside from being a charming and very personal view of one of my favorite flute players, it absolutely typifies what I associate with northern playing. The building of tension throughout, the lift, using the texture of the breath for expression, octave ambiguity, the reservation of the "power notes" until the second or even fourth A parts, the glottalization of the G rolls... Absolutely spellbinding.
That's really interesting, because Mike Rafferty was from Galway, and I'd consider his flute playing in line more with that style than Northern flute playing. For instance, compare Mike with Eddie Moloney.
An old Galway Saying (That I heard from Cathal McConnell): The ´Long Bow´ and the ´Long Blow´ for the Galway Style.

Not great recording quality, but uploaded to Youtube for posterity - I can't even remember who gave me this recording of Matt Molloy playing "The Japanese Hornpipe" at a pub gig, he never recorded it commercially AFAIK :
