Ronan Ryan on flute
I don't know if it's the same man but In 2013 I posted the following here,:
A few years ago, looking for a desk for the teenager in hope he'd study, we were in Ryan's furniture in Ennis. It was a dreary saturday afternoon and the furniture displayed in a big, damp, hall at the back of a small industrial estate.

Finding nothing we wandered around when a woman came in with a little girl carrying a flute case. The shop attendant asked the girl what she had there. It was a flute they had just collected from the O'Briens in Barefield. 'Can I have a little try?' the man asked and commenced to fill the hall with lovely powerful fluteplaying, bouncing it off the walls from end to end.

Sometimes you find beauty when you least expect it.
A lovely experience it was.

Stranger things have happened Mr G. Padraig Rynne and Liam O'Connor are certainly well known some 23 years later, and I do remember that Padraic O'Reilly made a solo recording as well. I have wondered what became of Ronan Ryan, but of course he would hardly be unique in eschewing the precarious life of a professional musician for a solid day job and just playing locally in his own community for his own enjoyment. I do hope he is still playing somewhere on the planet !

Padraic O'Reilly is pretty active but perhaps more on a local level and mostly as a piano player. I have seen him backng a wide variety of musicians. The O'Reillys also organise and run the Corofin festival.

Here's one snap of him in action, backing the Droneys, not as recent as I would like but it's one I had handy:

For Ronan Ryan, try google 'Iron Mountain' in combination with his name. :P

Prepare yourself for this sort of thing though.

This, to me, is perhaps one of the greatest examples of 'northern-style' flute playing ever recorded. Aside from being a charming and very personal view of one of my favorite flute players, it absolutely typifies what I associate with northern playing. The building of tension throughout, the lift, using the texture of the breath for expression, octave ambiguity, the reservation of the "power notes" until the second or even fourth A parts, the glottalization of the G rolls... Absolutely spellbinding.

I'm sure the 2nd tune is better known by a different title. Escapes me, but I'm sure someone will recognise it.
Even more of a challenge - anyone know which LP record this came from ? [ I've long forgotten ]. Ta.

That's really interesting, because Mike Rafferty was from Galway, and I'd consider his flute playing in line more with that style than Northern flute playing. For instance, compare Mike with Eddie Moloney.

I had been going to say the same, Nico, but held back. Or if you want to look at it from the other direction, compare Mike Rafferty's version with Desi Wilkinson's.
