........just catching up w/ this thread.....
I'm self-taught via the sight-reading method on a keyless flute.....
(I wish I started by ear....but what the h***).......most of the sheet music that was hanging around here was in @#%$ keys....left over from generations of kids taking band..you get the idea.......
So I pass along the "Secret Circle of Tenths"........so you can transpose in real time as you sight read..... This is based on noticing that if you transpose by a fifth twice the written notes move up or down by one. So if you only want to (or only can) play in G or D then:
(Eb) bbb = ^^#
(Bb) bb = ^^##
(F ) b = ^#
(C ) C = ^##
(G ) # = #
(D ) ## = ##
(A ) ### = v#
(E ) #### = v##
So for music written in F (ie b) I just play it as if the notes were written one note higher on the staff........in G, etc., etc.
I find musical notation confusing so I hope this is correct....but it's easy to do in practice.........
