Despite the "Chirp" from Denny, it usually means the common fipple flute around here.....although, whistling (my original instrument...) is legitimate enough, these days be prepared to get less respect then "that" Boudhran player......

The site www.allmusic.com is a good resource for looking up album details. And in their credits listings, they make a distinction between "whistle (human)" and "whistle (instrument)". But, of course, their data-bot usually gets it wrong. So according to them, the likes of Mary Bergin and Brian Finnegan are whistling away like the Seven Dwarves. :P

If you're confused, what's happened is that your comment has
discombobulated some folks. This is originally a TinWhistle forum,
and has only branched out to other instruments as it became
necessary. Likewise, most people come here because of the whistle,
and take up other instruments later. So it's surprising to find a
member who doesn't know about the whistle.

If you look at the forum index, you'll notice that the first in the list
is the Whistle forum. It is a great place to learn about the instrument.

I know almost nothing about the flute, I was wondering if I could get some newbie info on it, if anyone cares to share.

Like:

How hard is it? I know all band/orchestra instruments are hard to some degree, but is this too big of a jump for a total amateur? I have loads of time to waste practicing.

Does it require a lot of care and maintinaince?

Is it fun? It looks fun to me.

Are there any brands to watch out for? Good or bad?

And, are they expensive..
To begin with, I'd say that a musical instrument, any instrument, represents a musical voice, as the voice of the player.

Basically, it comes down to your interest in having such a voice.

If that sounds good, then go for it!

I was not accusing you of being part of that subversive group that calls itself "some folks".

Tell us something.: Love playing trumpet and modern flute at church as well as Irish trad flute in a band. Been playing Irish trad and 18th century period music for about 15 years.

WOW!!! That's amazing! And he's even on pitch (better than I am with a REAL instrument!)... I thought the tin whistle was the simplest (not to play, just in complexity) instrument out there!
