Well, it is March - key time for hares....... relevant? Or just mad?
I respect people's privilege to hold their beliefs, whatever those may be (within reason), but respect the beliefs themselves? You gotta be kidding!

A. How can I find or listen to other people's clips, and
B. How can I make my own.
I don't get it. How does it work???

Re: Posting clips
You should be able to just click on the clips and play them. If you can record into your computer, you can convert the file to an mp3 and upload to box.net. Add that link to your post and you're ready to go!rhauck wrote:A. How can I find or listen to other people's clips, and

Just messing around with a tune my fiddler friend likes to play. First take. Played on my Firth, Pond & Co. flute.
Any feedback welcomed as always.

Re: Posting clips
Watched your video, sj. The playing is very very good. That old flute has some life in it yet. Tone was very good; phrasing good. The only major issue was intonation on certain notes (as I hear is common with the old flutes). To my ear, it seemed the B and middle d were sharp, F# flat (common for all 3, but on your flute it seems more out than most). Playing any simple flute in tune is a challenge for anyone; I'm always working on it as well.sjcavy wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pE3RNo2k2VE
I'm a newbie at recording, flute, youtube.... etc etc. so I preemptive-ly apologize

That was pretty damn good. I enjoyed it. Your tone and rhythm seemed spot-on and your embouchure maintained stamina right until the end. I did find it was a bit choppy at times, however, and maybe too much tonguing of the notes gave it a bit too much staccato feel in certain phrases. My teacher always tells me to "blow through" the phrases as much as possible and not try to emphasize every note (or second note, or whatever) with tonguing or glottal stops. Makes everything sound smoother. Great job.

Re: Posting clips
Thanks for the comments. I totally agree with you. I wasn't liking my tone, and I agree the phrasing was choppy, although I could live with it as a stylistic approach. As I said, it was a one=off- hadn't practiced it before, just picked up the flute cold and went with it. I was also trying to 'play' around with it some, so I think a lot of the little variations happened in the moment, and I wasn't really paying attention to the overall phrasing. You know how when you have a version of a tune that you always play it seems comfortable and familiar, and easier in my opinion to keep the phrasingdrewr wrote:ImNotIrish wrote:Just messing around with a tune my fiddler friend likes to play. Re: Posting clips
Just listened to your clip again. Thought it had a nice pulse and phrasing. I would like to hear it a little slower so I could really get a sense of the ornamentation and phrasing. Thought the levels might be a little high as well. Good work! Look forward to hearing more from you!drewr wrote:I thought I'd throw this out there if anyone wants to give it a listen.
These are two reels called O'ot Be Est Da Vong and Maid of the House. Brendan Mulholland plays this set on one of the Wooden Flute Masters CDs.
Lots of ornamentation practice in these tunes. Played on a Dave Copley delrin. Thanks for any comments good or bad.
