Comhaltas
Just listening to some music on this Friday morning. Check out this from the Comhaltas website.
http://comhaltas.ie/music/detail/comhal ... programme/
I particularly enjoyed the playing of Orlaith McAuliffe and Edel Fox. Great stuff all of it.

Re: Comhaltas
she's a very talented, skilled, player, full of chops, no doubt. but ultimately boring, in my view.

Re: Comhaltas
Thanks for the link!
Orlaith McAuliffe is a very good flute player.
Notice she has a powerful and stable Low D, as well as using almost perfect ornamentation.
She is just incredible, and has a beautiful feminine flute playing style.
(And she is veeery cute by the way hehe )

I'm with you Diego ........ ..
Also the 'feminine' touch...that could be worth a seperate discussion in itself..
Is there such a thing ??........I reckon there is....
Shannon Heaton,Nuala Kennedy are two that spring to mind..

Thanks for sharing the video.
I feel that she plays a little "too perfect". Almost feels classical.
But of course, I would be happy if I could play a tenth as good as her in the future.

Re: Comhaltas
"feminine touch"? Are you suggesting that female and male musicians typically have stylistic differences that reflect, in addition to the expression of the individual and the environment in which one learned one's music, the gender of the performer? Can you name some specific musical characteristics that you associate with one gender over the other? you mention Shannon Heaton and Nuala Kennedy sharing similar qualities in their playing as Orlaith. Obviously, these musicians have very different playing styles from each other; so what motivates you to group these individuals together other than possibly the fact that they are all female, which has here been equated with being feminine? This makes for an interesting discussion, but is it not a slippery slope to start lumping musicians of one gender together and branding them as being unique from the other?I'm with you Diego ........ ..

Re: Comhaltas
Jeez Owen.....I feel as though I've been 'clubbed over the head' by your academic response to my wonderings....
"Are you suggesting that female and male musicians typically have stylistic differences "....
Nope,I was'nt 'suggesting' anything
"you mention Shannon Heaton and Nuala Kennedy sharing similar qualities in their playing as Orlaith."..
Nope,I dont recall mentioning that at all....
In fact,IMHO Nuala Kenndedy is quite an agressive player....In some musical circles here in OZ,there is a saying, which is actually a compliment..."She plays like a bloke" ..if you can dig that..
And..."so what motivates you to group these individuals together "..and.."lumping musicians of one gender together and branding them as being unique from the other?" ..Yer puttin' words into me mouth again mate...
What I was refering to in my wonderings was femininity....Girls have a girly way about them ( )...They way they walk, think, fiddle with their hair, the way take your arm when we go out together, the way they dress, decorate a room, sooth a cranky bloke, look at themselves in a mirror, come up with something reasonable when a bloke is being UNreasonable, sit and talk with other girls about girly things, their luck in being able to cry without feeling any shame... etc.......
In short...........just being girls...
So with all this in mind,I wondered if this 'girliness' comes out in the music ?..
On the CD Wooden Flute Obsession #3,Shannon Heaton plays a most lovely set of O'Connor Don's/The Morning Thrush....It was these two tunes that first popped the idea of a 'feminine touch' into my head...I dont know why my brain went that way ,but it did ...The playing is delicate and beautiful.....
Thats not to say that a bloke cant play with delicacy and beauty, its obvious that we can....I just wondered if things came out differently with a girl at the helm...
That is.......... a feminine touch ........
