How do you feel the volume of the flute octaves should relate to each other?

The low octave should be loudest, the middle octave a bit softer, anything higher softest of all.

The volume of the octaves should be roughly equal.

The flute naturally plays louder the higher the note played.

2-Part Poll Part 1: volume of each octave

Post by peeplj »

The threads on "filling the flute" has aroused my curiosity on how folks perceive a couple of things--thus, two polls.

Thanks!

James,

Interesting thought, though I need a bit of clarification. Do you mean for us to answer those questions as they relate to the instrument itself, or to how we think a flute should be played?

Thanks!

I'm not an expert, but I voted naturally louder in the higher register because all instruments seem to be this way. But is it louder or just maybe can you hear higher notes more easily or is there something else like the waves of sound reaching some optimal point for the size of the tube?

I used to play in an English handbell choir once you reached a certain size of bell they were suddenly much much louder. And there was nothing you could do to make the lower ones match that.

I'm sorry, you're right, the way I phrased it is a bit ambiguous.

I'm asking how, ideally, you think a flute is best played, not necessarily about the acoustic qualities of the flute itself.

So I picked the first option because the hihger octaves are natuarlly louder.
my idea is that try to play them softer without losing the pitch
and the lowest octave louder because that is naturally softer.
