That looks like a frisbee, not a musical instrument. :o

I saw this and bought one. $40. Fascinating. Partly because right off without scrutiny, it looks like the physics of the music making is very similar to that of a clarinet. The clarinet jumps two octaves when it jumps. This is because it is closed on one end and open on the other. Another difference between a clarinet and a flute is the flute mostly couples out (sends out) sound from the air jet of the embouchure. Clarinets and trumps couple (send out) the sound out the end- hence the bell. It is my guess that a ring flute will jump from the first to the 3rd octave for a different reason: The embouchure is at an anti-node for the second octave. But maybe that is what that little tail is for; a capacitive reactance to put the antinode to the right of the embouchure. We’ll see. Does anyone want to speculate about the physics of the standing wave in the ring flute before we get one?

They said it was in the key of A, it must be the A below our usual D flute. The test sound sounded pretty low.

Hum, no... It jumps a twelfth (ex from C to G). It jumps two harmonics (from the tonic to the second one), instead of one like a flute.

In my opinion the ring flute is just a curved flute, I think the "headjoint" is not related to the "foot joint" and the little tail is just the end of the tube... Not that original in fact. :)

Actually they are very different in that matter. If you close the end of trumpet completely, you will not get any sound. if you do the same on a clarinet, a sax or a flute, it will just affect the low notes. (I was a sax and clarinet player before playing the flute ;) )

I saw these on Ebay and was tempted but have yet to give in... I agree with Matts assessment - from the photos it just looks like a normal flute bent into a circle, not a complete loop of air. So a very hard to play toy. But heck, it's another weird flute. Can't have too many of 'em :)

We discussed this flute on the whistle board a while back, and I contacted the maker. This is exactly what it is--a curved flute.
