Nigel Richard (Garvie Bagpipes)

Post by Peter Duggan »

Just seen an announcement from Euan Richard (Nigel's son) on Facebook that Nigel died on Friday night... a great loss to music worldwide as well as a really nice man.
And we in dreams behold the Hebrides.

Oh dear.
I knew he had been having health issues for some years. I knew him from the '80s, when he was an occasional guest with the band I played in. Subsequently I bought a chanter and a low whistle of his making, and he helped fettle my pipes more than once. He was an excellent craftsman, and a nice guy.
My deepest condolences to his family and his near & dear ones.

Happy trails, Nigel!

Thats really sad news, I had been meaning to speak with him next week :(

He was a lovely man to speak to and deal with.

As has been said, he'll be a loss to the music world.

Iain.

I visited Nigel at home I think three times... once to discuss border pipes, once to collect the set he made me and once to find the perfect chanter reed for it where the original hadn't quite suited. On one of these visits he gave me a spare copy of Gerry Farrell's 'Indian Music in Education', and we also discussed a shared love of mountains and the outdoors. He was just so interested in people and what they did.
And we in dreams behold the Hebrides.

Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry, my heart goes out to his family.

I had just heard the other day that he had taken a turn for the worse but I had no idea it was life-threatening.
