Shruti Box?

We have some evidence, however, that you may have to pay for the reeds.

Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

Isn't it the bass viol doing the droning?
Do you mean the double bass?

No, the Shruti box is on the stand directly in front of Julie Fowlis. She isn't playing Shruiti in this video but its there.

Ohhh! I didn't see it there. The box, occasionally hiding the fiddler's arm? Yep. OK. I see it now.

Well, technically, the double bass is a member of the viol family, rather than the violin family, so you weren't entirely off the mark. It's only that, these days, the term "bass viol" is normally reserved for an instrument more in line with renaissance viols than the modern incarnation of the double bass. It's interesting, though, that Wiktionary gives as a synonym for bass viol, "double bass". I would never use the two as synonyms, but clearly it is done.

In the end, the only reason I queried you was to check exactly which instrument you meant in that line-up.
