What's the odd's of your existence.
Any statistician's out there ,that could work out the odds of your existence considering that when you were conceived ,that any other individual sperm that fertilised the egg that led to you being born had been a different sperm, than you would not exist. Than trace those odds back to all your ancestors since the beginning of life on earth.

- Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

I would say the odds of me existing are approximately 100%.

I like this kind of pondering. I have known my whole life that I am special.
Now that they are finding more planets that may be in the sweet zone of life, this is going to start getting very interesting. I hope they find life.

- Tell us something.: I like whistles, flutes, lyres, cittern/mandolin/bouzouki family instruments, as well as heavy and nasty slap bass. Languages, linguistics, history (especially Migration Period and Bronze Age Europe), cuisine from various parts of Latin America, chili growing, bushcraft, and the works of JRR Tolkien also tickle my fancy.

I happen to think that it's very likely that most things occur due to a chain-reaction where one event sets off another. So, I'd also agree that the odds are 100%, unless of course there really are factors that cause some events in the universe to be truly random. No way of really knowing for sure, though.

What's the original 'event' then Sirchronique? And before you answer bear in mind that this kind of thinking will wreck your head.

Get your minds out of the gutter.

What are the odds of your existence? (Maybe slim, depending on who you had for fourth grade).

No, no ... You're all answering the wrong question: What is the ODD's [awareness] of your existence. Where "awareness" is understood. And ODD is clearly the Office of the Deputy Director of the CIA. In Rory's case, I'd say the ODD's awareness is probably high. They keep a close eye on people like Rory. Well, actually, on people like all of us, apparently. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if ... Oh, sorry, someone's knocking at the door. Jeez, I wonder who it could be at this time of night? ...crookedtune wrote:What are the odds of your existence? The likelihood of any event which has already happened is 1 - a sure thing. They don't work in retrospect. Not that I want to start a fight or anything, but that's why Intelligent Design is pseudoscience.
And now there was no doubt that the trees were really moving - moving in and out through one another as if in a complicated country dance. ('And I suppose,' thought Lucy, 'when trees dance, it must be a very, very country dance indeed.')

I should have said "what were the odd's of you coming into existence?"Pretty astronomical I would think .A googleplex to one would be what the bookies would give you at the time when the earth was only covered in sludge. But if you believe in predeterminism you would only get evens, but then why are there on average 300 million sperm in each ejaculate . God does like to play dice .

Well, I think I'm pretty miraculous.

No, you're just highly unlikely*. There's a difference.Nanohedron wrote:Well, I think I'm pretty miraculous.
* As opposed to unlikeable. The jury's still out on that one.
