Snuggie: Is the market big enough for this many contenders?

Post by fearfaoin »

So, anyone who has watched enough US TV
in the last couple months has probably seen a
commercial for "the Snuggie", or seen product
placement for that same product within a show
or heard someone lamenting the ubiquity of said
product during 24 hour "news" programming.

If you haven't seen it, it's a friggin' blanket
with sleeves.
Image

Here's the commercial:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2xZp-GLMMJ0

Anywho, what I didn't know is that the Snuggie
is not the only product of this type. It's makers
were just the first with enough of an ad budget
to become the latest flash in the pan.

First was a product called the Freedom blanket.
Clearly, its inventor was not able to patent it,
or did not have the wherewithal to do so. D'oh.

Last night I was alerted to the existence of the
Slanket, thanks to a tongue-in-cheek product
placement on the show "30 Rock".

Seriously, is there really a market for 3 blankets
with sleeves?! But wait, there's more! For the
Brewster's Millions crowd, there's the Blankoat,
made of Icelandic wool. Only $330.

There's a comparisons of these products (and
a regular robe worn backwards) at gizmodo:

And, in case this post has alienated our friends
across the Atlantic, I offer this: "Cor, I wish I
could invent some tat and flog it to some prats
for a load of dosh!"

She looks like one of the "mad monks" on an early computer game we had for Mac, called "Load Runner."
They'd crawl out of the woodwork and whup your a** as you tried to retrieve treasure from the various levels.
My head still replays the Load Runner background music with its driving beat now and then. Like now.

There was a sketch on the Snuggie ads on one of the late night comedy talk shows, and the final slogan was, "Yes, you're that lazy."

That's kind of cool, really....just think of how hard it would be to whup someone's a** wearing something like that! I might buy one now, just so I can try it out.

It looks like a Cult robe or some kind of devil worshiping thing.

Apparantly it generates quite a bit of static electricity.
You could call yourself "The Electrode" or something.

'S'nuthin new. We had some version of this back in the 70's. and the 80's, 90's... etc. In fact, I bet I could dig deep enough in some closet (or the spaces we loving refer to as 'closets') and find one, gifted me by some thoughtful individual who didn't know how much I can't wear polyester.

it's getting so much media attention this
time around.

 I suppose, if you are prone to seeing the debbil in everything out of the ordinary. Personally, I see it as a robe/blanket combo that someone would wear/use for comfort, not religious or anti-religious activities. Of course, that is basically what monks' robes were, and great kilts too. To each their own, I suppose.

Supposedly, the Snuggies are "one size fits all" . . . but seeing how gosh darn big and floppy these things are, it's more like "one size fits no one".
Infomercials are just plain scary. Has anyone bought something truly amazing or useful from one?
