So you live in California?

(Seriously, there are areas nearby here which look very much like that.)

So, the Phoenix is a bird that lives, dies in a ball of flame, and then arises reborn from its own ashes. What happens if the wind blows the ashes away? These are the sort of things that occupy a great deal of my thoughts.

I'd rather be atop the foothills than beneath them.

Possibly there are more than a few places on Earth that look not so different from that picture.

... which goes to prove we never made it to the Moon. These digital conspiracies are much more convincing than the analog Moon landings.

These are great.

You know, something that really fascinates me is the possibility of a manned mission to Mars. I'm interested in what obstacles would have to be overcome to get people there alive and bring them back. Not the least of which is the LONG, LONG round trip in what would, out of necessity, have to be a pretty tight space. How to best spin the thing to create a little artificial gravity to keep people reasonably healthy and fit. How to deal with the psychological/sociological problems. Tight, tight living with others. Boredom. The knowledge that the odds of not making it are huge. The paradox of moving at an incredible speed but having it feel and look like you're just hanging in space. I wonder if it'll ever happen.

How long would it take?

I think there are now thought to be serious radiation
problems in outer space, by the way.

That's what I understand, a year, maybe a little less to get there. Several months mission on the planet. A year to get back. A lot of unmanned missions first to install hardware and supplies.

Oh, dear. Just reading that gave me an anxiety attack. I'm sitting here nauseous, flushed, and trying desperately to suppress some really vivid claustrophobic OH MY GOD! I'M TRAPPED IN THIS BOX AND I CAN'T GET OUT! feelings.

Thanks, dude.
