What do you do with crystalized honey??

Post by fel bautista »

I have a jar of honey and it has crystalized; doesn't pour from the jar, etc. Anyone know how to make it useable again?? Seems a waste to just throw it away.

Leave it in the jar and put it in a saucepan of water over low heat until the crystals melt. (I like to take the lid off the jar, although I doubt there is a serious pressure build up.)

I've read you can microwave it, too, but I;ve never tried that.

I've never had much luck with the microwave, but the saucepan of water method's worked well for me in the past.

Grandma used to stick the jar in a window to and let the sun dissolve it.

I microwave mine. It doesn't take long, so keep an eye on it and take it out to stir frequently. When it's just a bit in the bottom of the honey bear, 15 seconds does the trick. If it was a more substantial quantity, I'd try 30-second increments. You want to melt the crystals but not cook the honey.

Mmmm...Suebee honey. One of the American foods that I still have to import, even after nearly four years. Fortunately the quantities that I bring are permitted - honey is a moderately controlled import product.

I like crystallized honey if it is not too hard. You can spread it like peanut butter. It will not drip all over you that way. If you do need to have your honey runny, then merely place the container (glass jar) in a pan of hot water on the stove.

I usually have a LOT of honey, so putting it into water doesn't always work well for me. I usually take it out of the jar completely and put it all into the saucepan. You have to keep it on low, temperature wise, though, and watch it like a hawk because it will boil over if you leave it for too long on too high of heat. But it works like a charm every time :)
