Life lists, life goals

A talk show host has been asking guests this question.

Any goal setters in the pub? Did you set goals at a early age? For parents do you encourage your children to think about the blue sky of opportunity available to them?

Some common things on lists are places to visit, skills to learn (a degree, musical instrument, languages), owning something in particular whether it be a certain car or house or other. For many younger folks it is about having children, getting married.

I don't know if I had a "goal" growing up. I knew I was expected to be a self sufficent member of society that also gives back. And I raised my kids with that same ideal.
My son decide at age 12 that he wanted to be an aircraft mechanic. If the ship ever gets out of drydock, he may get that chance!
My other son thinks he may want to do something with animals, and has been getting volunteer hours along that line.

I've set lots of goals in my life. Currently I'm working on becoming a master of the Tantric arts.

My goal was to get the hell out of Norn Iron. A lot of people have that goal. It wasn't really funny, either.

Now my goals are to survive as long as possible,
to remember a little happiness every day,
and to help people where and when I can.

(A subsidiary goal is to learn a few more hornpipes on the whistle.)

When I was twelve I wrote a list. The ones I remember are: I wanted to become fluent in two other languages, live overseas, and meet Brent Spiner. I've managed one of the three, would still like to acheive another, and I've got Brent Spiner's autograph so I figure that's close enough.

Curiously enough, that was on my "to do" list when I was about twelve too.
Great minds (Trekkies) think alike? :D

Long ago I had a goal of becoming a procrastinator.

But after a few days went by, I realized it would be too much work, and I gave it up.

I was always cynical. I am trying to be less so.

I seem to do better just coasting through life.

I tend to be a "follow your muse" kind of guy, but I also tend to make decisions early and hold to them steadfastly. (Don't worry, I can't reconcile those, either.) At any rate, I've pretty much got my educational goals planned and in mind, and I'm sort of trusting that I'll know what to do with the rest as it comes. It's working out, so far.

My High School yearbook lists my goal as "to live happily ever after". Unfortunately, it took until I was 49 for it to REALLY come together! Good news is, now it's happening more than I could have ever expected.

Much of my generation eschewed goals to "live in the moment." Goals were square, man.

My life goals are to be happy and nice to other people. I have other specific goals (not many), but they're really beside life rather than life itself.

"At the age of four, I wanted to be a baker, at five, I wanted to be a policeman, at seven I wanted to be Napoleon, and my aspirations have been growing ever since." -- Salvador Dali

(I may have gotten a detail or two wrong)
