Growth: in four quatrains by Walden

Post by Walden »

Is growth a constant process?
Or does it come in spurts?
Although it is a positive,
At times it rather hurts.

When I was just a baby
My growth came very fast,
I struggled and complained of it,
But soon the pangs were past.

And then, as I grew older,
The growth slowed down, to soothe,
Until I hit that teen growth spurt,
And it was not so smooth.

Growth is an inner struggle:
Inside is where it hurts,
But, when all's done, and I look back,
I'm glad to see those spurts.

What's with all this "spurting" going on, already? :really:

I'd rather be atop the foothills than beneath them.

Hmm... phrased that way it sounds a little off-color. :)

With regard to the evolution of the planet geologists have been arguing this topic for many years. Uniformitarianism suggests that "the present is the key to the past" manifested by a somewhat steady state of change or growth, if you will. Others, in the spurting tradition like to mention a catastrophe and sudden change here and there. I am one of those who would have it both ways, to have my cake and to eat it too.

Nice poem, Walden.

Don't know about people, but I use to chart growth rates in skye puppies and found it fascinating. They did not grow all over in a constant rate. One week it would be muzzle length and skull girth, another it might be only height at withers, another body length. It was always in pieces, never all over(except for weight). I charted not only my own litters over the years, but the litters of fanciers all over the country. It was useful in estimating proportion, size, etc in them as adults.
"Let low-country intruder approach a cove
And eyes as gray as icicle fangs measure stranger
For size, honesty, and intent."

Because it hurts in spurts, or spurts when it hurts? :D
