looking for a painting...

Post by Jack »

I'm looking to find the name of a painting in which Mary (mother of Jesus) is in a large red dress sitting on one side of a big room or office of some sort, and a man is sitting on the other side directly across from her. I think she's holding baby Jesus in her arms, but I can't remember that for sure.

I only remember learning about this painting in a class before, because somebody remarked that Mary was almost always depicted clad in white or blue, but in this one she was covered entirely in deep red but I forgot the name of the painting (and the painter), and it's driving me crazy trying to think of it again. I want to see if I can find a large version of it online and set it as my background.

The only things I remember for sure was that it was Italian (at least, I think it was Italian) and a few hundred years old.

Does anybody have any idea whatsoever about what I'm talking about or do I sound like a rambling loon? :-?

Hah! I thought it might be Titian, too. No joy. But there are more red robes about than one might think...

How about this one? Van Eyck.

I love the medieval garb and decor. I wasn't aware that Mary had ever visited renaissance Italy.
I'm no longer trying a new posting paradigm

And here I found a huge one that I can use as a background. Thank you scotty!

Does anybody know if it's violating copyright to use that as your background without permission if the artist has been dead for 500 years?

Best be careful; those two squat persons in the background are watching the river, on guard against intellectual property pirates. Still, they've been on post for a reeeally long time; they're very tired now. Go for it.

Van Eyck is Da absolute Bomb when it comes to oil painting. I took an art history class in college and we spent about two or three weeks on Van Eyck. Rogier van der Weyden too. . . . yuuuummmm!

Despite Disney's best efforts, after 500 years, that sucker's in the
public domain. I don't even think copyrights existed at that time...

Now that I look at the large version, it looks like that baby Jesus
has been losing a lot of sleep!
