That was a gracious act. An other article I read a month or so ago had Ireland at 10th place in the 10 teams playing. This is not to dismiss their sacrifice in any way. Giving up your shot in a tournament, even a long shot, is painful. Teams work hard to be included in playoffs. But it does show a practical pragmatism that is also to be praised. By putting the 3rd place team in their proper spot they proved to be great sportsmen. Bravo.
