Karan Casey is a brilliant singer AND a great musician.
I'm dumbfounded that she wasn't mentioned earlier.

I agree about Karan, but I've been down that road with dubh before. That's why I didn't mention her.

I think Edith Piaf belongs among the greats.

This song is called La Foule and it means The Crowd. This is a sort of goofy machine translation of it but I think it gets the idea across to some extent at least.
"I re-examine the city celebrates some and is delirious about it
Suffocating under the sun and under the joy
And I hear in the music the cries, the laughter
Which bursts and rebounds around me
And lost among these people who hustle me
Dazed, disabled, I remain
When sudden there, I am turned over, it is moved back,
And the crowd comes to throw me between its arms...
Carried by the crowd which trails us
Involves us
Crushes one against the other
We form one body
And the flood without effort
Pushes us, connected one and the other
And leave us both
Opened out, enivrés and happy.
Involved by the crowd which springs
And which dances an insane farandole
Our two hands remain welded
And sometimes raised
Our two intertwined bodies fly away
And fall down both
Opened out, enivrés and happy.
And the joy splashed by its smile
Transpierces me and flashes back at the bottom of me
But suddenly I push a cry among the laughter
When crowd comes to tear itself from between my arms
Carried by the crowd which trails us
Involves us
Moves us away one from the other
I fight and I debate
But the sound of its voice
Is choked in the laughter of the others
And I shout of pain, of fury and of rage
And I cry
Involved by the crowd which springs
And which dances an insane farandole
I am carried far away
And I contract my fists, cursing the crowd which steals from me
The man that it had given me
And that I never found."
Oh, I just now see that The Sporting Pitchfork mentioned Edith Piaf, so I will second his nomination.

She doesn't just sing to you, she hugs you with her voice.

Re: Karan Casey!
Wrath of dubhlinn or no, IMHO Karan Casey is in a league of her own when it comes to female Irish vocalists. Kate Rusby would be in the same league if you were to include English vocalists. Dolores Keane was once there too. Aoife O'Donovan of crooked still probably qualifies by descent but comparisons to Alsion Krauss are still a bit premature IMO. If we're talking vocal technique, Aussie singer Lisa Gerrard of the band (and Flanum neighbours) Dead Can Dance and the soundtrack from Gladiator deserves a mention.jsluder wrote:Now you've done it.
