The first hundred or so pages are a killer, and I've always given up and switched to something more entertaining, like "The Greatest Works of Warren G. Harding" or "The Complete History of German Philosophy."
There is a troll - one must not speak his name - who arises at the smell of it. Change the "A" for an "I", and search. I must reveal no more.

Pliers? To partly quote Roseanne Barr, you couldn't pull it out with a tractor.gonzo914 wrote:Don't make me send you butt pliers.Nanohedron wrote:You did it again. What happened to Bilbo, Frodo, and Sam when they crossed the Sea to the Blessed Lands? My vote . . . neither. My reply . . . who cares?
For a change of films, watch "The Last Unicorn". Discuss. Book and Screenplay written by Peter Beagle. Hey, and Christopher Lee in it, at least vocally. An amazing book and animated film that appeals more to adults than children. It still makes me cry!

I sing the birdie tune
It makes the birdies swoon
It sends them to the moon
Just like a big balloon

I am sure this is confirmed by Tolkien himself in one of his published letters. In short, mortal races are mortal and it is not within the jurisdiction or power of the Valar to grant them elf-like immortality.peeplj wrote:I have always been under the impression that they crossed the Sea for a time of healing and peace before they died.

I read somewhere that they ended up on Tol Eressea, "The Lonely Isle" not the Undying Lands. I wish I could remember where I read that, I think it might have been in one of those lost tales type books that Tolkien's son put together.
If anything, they probably simply were given a time to heal and gain a bit of peace before passing on. They were, after all, mortal, and it's quite clearly stated in several places (especially throughout the Silmarillion) that the final fate of the souls of mortals is not the same as that of the Elves, though nobody knows what Illuvitar (the Creator of Middle-Earth) had in mind for them, not even the Valar.
Them gaining immortality in the Undying Lands wouldn't make sense at all in the context of Tolkien's world, just wouldn't follow the rules of it at all.
