I see.

There are occasional joking references to them here. Is this the Irish equivalent of the KKK, then?

Errrr, yes, pretty much. If you click on the "Common Sense" caption, it links to a Guardian newspaper article about the new leader of the Orange Order bringing in some "Common Sense". (This could be the end of the Orange Order!)
I used to know a man who was closely involved in Freemasonry. He said that the Orange Order started up in Ulster because the Freemasons would not tolerate the degree of anti-Catholic feeling they encouraged. So in a sense they are "dissident" Freemasons. But they are disturbingly Official and Offically recognised.

We have had Orangemen and Orange Lodges for at least a hundred years here, brought over by immigrants. Like other dated institutions of hate, it is floundering in a sea of bad press, with few members left. Since so few people take either Roman Catholicism or Protestantism seriously any more, there just isn't enough fuel to maintain the fight.

Unfortunately, our appetite for hate has simply moved on to new institutions, with new excuses for abuse and intolerance. Neonazism is very strong in my part of the country.

So are pipebombs, but there is a Political Forum for this type of commentary. We try to keep things light in the Pub.
