Re: Guide to pronunciation rules for Irish/Gaelic?
In case any one is actually interested (though it's beginning to look as if the original poster isn't interested...perhaps he's been scared off!), I've made a couple of changes to my pronunciation guide above. I first put it together a few years ago, when my knowledge of Irish pronunciation wasn't as strong as it is now, and I noticed some "overgeneralizations" as I was reading through it.

Redwolf, would you object if we made your Guide a sticky somewhere on the board?

OK, Redwolf, I've placed it as a locked sticky in the ITM Forum. Thank you!

I still think we ought to have an Irish Language subforum. There's clearly enough interest, as these sorts of questions seem to come up fairly regularly.MTGuru wrote:Redwolf, would you object if we made your Guide a sticky somewhere on the board?

I'll second that. True, there are other resources on the web, but such a forum seems appropriate here, too.avanutria wrote:I still think we ought to have an Irish Language subforum. Besides, there's already at least one C&F moderator who speaks Irish.

There does seem to be some interest. If nothing else, it might be nice for people to have a place to ask about some of those (seemingly unpronounceable, and thus usually mispronounced) tune names.avanutria wrote:I still think we ought to have an Irish Language subforum. Re: Guide to pronunciation rules for Irish/Gaelic?
Better yet, perhaps C&F could perform a unique service to the global ITM community. For instance, perhaps not only could English pronunciations of Irish tune names be provided, but perhaps the English names of tunes could then be "restored" back into Irish, as a service to the ITM community that maybe not even Comhaltas could currently offer.Redwolf wrote:...If nothing else, it might be nice for people to have a place to ask about some of those (seemingly unpronounceable, and thus usually mispronounced) tune names...
And, perhaps that could give the members of a C&F Irish Language Forum something to do.
