Yes.Denny wrote:are you running XP?
Nothing other than what came with the 'puter when I bought it, so far as I know.Denny wrote:what browser are you using?
You have to realise that you're talking to an ungeek of the first water, here. I don't even really know what the heck a browser is, much less why I should.

Alt/Ctrl/Delete
(hold the "alt" key, hold the "ctrl" key, press the "delete" key)
this will bring up "Task Manager" it has four tabs, if the selected tab is not "Processes" then select the "Processes" tab
there will be a list of active tasks
find iexplore.exe
select it (click on that line)
click "End process" (there is a button on the lower right....)
confirm (a box will pop up asking if you really want to do this....click Yes)
restart IE (start the browser, again)
don't go back there again (do try to avoid that web site)

it stops the pop ups, 'cause it kills the thing that is poppin'yer link in the OP wrote:Some users have reported success in thwarting the attack by simply killing Firefox from the task manager or rebooting
"simply killing Firefox from the task manager" = the instructions I gave
rebooting....didn't I mention kicking the plug out of the wall? same/same
The browser is the program that you are now using to look at Chiff and
Fipple. It access the World Wide Web. You "browse the web" with it (thus
"browser"). If we'd co-opted the word "surf" earlier, it would be called a
"surfer".
causes your browser to keep popping up windows, so you can't close it.
If this were to happen, you would have to follow Denny's directions to force
your browser to close. Or you could just reboot if it ever happens.
This would become necessary because the "virus" in question takes over
your browser and only lets you look at their fake website. The fake website
looks like anti-virus software and tries to fool you into running it. If you ran
their fake anti-virus software, it would presumably do bad things to your
machine.
Is that layman-y enough? (It's always hard to make sure I've written all the
pertinent background, because one often forgets what one didn't know when
one was a newbie oneself.)
