New ABC player

Post by GaryKelly »

Got this from my friend Lesl:

Here's a free (!) program which takes tunes in ABC-notation and (a) plays
them, (b) shows & prints the score, and (c) makes & saves MIDI files of
them. (Windoze only by the looks).

http://abcnavigator.free.fr/

There's no help file yet, but one's on the way soon apparently (Hint: to play a tune, you have to double-click on it.) It seems to work quite well - and the price is right.

It has "on the fly" slow-downing and stuff too (for the ABC, not CD). Very cool.

I just tried this and it works well. Much improvement after fighting with abcmus for so long.

Looks cool. I'll have to try it but I think my hard drive is fried so it may be awhile before I get on from home.

Sure, but will it help me learn the alphabet?? :)

Just kidding. Great idea and good on ya for posting it!

print question

Post by YvonneBr »

Hello there, I've downloaded navigator and I'm impressed about it's function.
One problem I have is with the printing?
It seems I can only print just one bar. Can anyone tell me how to split the bar and make sure the music fits to one page? and not just the bar?

It's a bit small to read*S*

Thank you!

Regards, Yvonne :boggle:

Hi Yvonne,

Have you added the tune to the print list? One thing I've found so far is that you have to add each tune individually to the print list before printing. Haven't found a way of adding all the tunes to the print list at once.

It's done by highlighting a tune, then clicking the "add to print list" button, shown here:

and then when all the tunes are added, opening the print list, and clicking 'print'. If your printer's set up okay it should come out fine.

Hope this helps!

Thanks Gary ... this looks great.

Question ... could someone direct me to a good site for tunes in ABC notation?
(I should know this already  )

The ABC homepage: http://www.gre.ac.uk/~c.walshaw/abc/#collections

You have to scroll down that page a bit to see the list of links to the major ABC collections (or click on the "collections" link)

Henrick Norbeck has a large collection of tunebooks at:
http://www.norbeck.nu/abc/

Then there's
JC's ABC Tunefinder: http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/music/abc/findtune.html
if you're looking for a specific title.

Also, http://www.thesession.org/ which is great stuff.

Hope this helps, Lisa!

Lisa,

if you like Hornpipes, you'll find 251 of the most popular in ABC format here:

http://www.firepowr.com/TRAD/abc/hornpipe.abc

Nice program, GK, looks cool. Haven't time to play with it now, but it looks pukka.
It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that schwing

Thanks, Martin!

(I like hornpipes when other people play them. Maybe this will motivate me to improve. )

This IS a nice little bit of software! Easy to use. Intuitive. Economically priced. Bilingual.

I especially like the concertina sound. Much better than toy piano.

Thanks!
