Help me make a CHILL FLUTE playlist!

Post by Ketil »

Hi
I use spotify and I need tips for making a chill flute (whistle/low whistle/pipes) playlist.. I listen to a lot of music while at work, but I get a bit to wired up listening to fast reels and jigs all the time so it would be nice to have a playlist with nice, slow, chill, emotional tunes.

Examples that come to mind
Michael McGoldrick - Sophies, Strange Journey
Sylvain Barou - Margaretig
Lunasa - Inion Ni Scannlain
Fraser Fifield - Stereocanto, Slow stream

Please give me pointers to slow reels, airs, waltzes and other kind of tunes. I like both traditional and contemporary so electronica backing is fine as well as flute/whistle solo and traditional backing.

Keep 'em coming!

Tell us something.: Hi Nano. I was somewhat active on the Chiffboards maybe 5 or 6 years ago, participating in several whistle tours (Bracker, Hardy, Ellis). I took a break from the Chiffboards, and music mostly, for several years because I got a full-time job and had a baby. I'm easing back into the music, though (which is great, I missed it). It's good to be back!

Here are some from my collection:

Dónal Lunny - Declan
Altan - An Feochán
Altan - Dobbin's Flowery Vale > Drogheda Lasses
Paddy Keenan - The Factory Girl
Paddy Keenan - Marig Ar Pollanton > Cahir's Kitchen
Paddy Keenan - Cape Clear
Lúnasa - The Miller of Drohan
Lúnasa - The Return from Fingal
Planxty - Sí Bheag Sí Mhór
Réalta - Open the Door for Three

I don't know if they're all available on Spotify, though.

You might like this guy, Brian O hUiginn. Just listen to some of his sample tracks:

Sharon Shannon also has some pretty jammin tracks with her, particularly The Road to Corrandulla.

And Fred Morrison has some neat stuff.

Pretty much any of Chris Norman's earlier recordings (some of the later ones, too). If you want to stick to Irish stuff, it's in there, but he particularly shines on Canadian tunes. You mentioned waltzes; he does some amazing Quebecois waltzes.

I'll add the suggestion of Flook's "The Gentle Giant" from their "Flatfish" cd.

Rothbury Hills (In a set with Holey Ha'penny, here, but chill with the first tune only)
Brafferton Village
Ciaran and Berni
C'est la Vie by Stackridge

All these tunes are playable on low whistle.

Great! Thanks!
Deiseal was great listening and Nicholas Williams also! Funny because i was listening to Crowfoot some time ago and I didn't know that Williams had released soloalbums as well!
