Copyright laws also vary by country. Due to Bill C-32 (1997) which amended Canada's copyright law it became (1998)perfectly legal to make copies "for personal use" from original, copyrighted recorded music in Canada. Note that there are several restrictions such as the copy cannot be used for public performance, the copy must be from an original, and the copy cannot be distributed. To offset the loss a revenue to the music industry a levy (aka tax) was placed on blank CDR media. In effect, this means I can legally borrow Rich's "Chieftains" CD, make a copy for myself, and return his CD to him so long as the copy is for my own "private use". Similar copyright laws exist in other countries. Don't believe me? Look it up for yourself at the following URLs.
