High D fingerings for a D whistle, Newbie question

Post by gregdidge »

I have seen 2 fingerings for the high D note. One is with all the holes closed and the other is with all but the top hole closed. Is one preferable to the other? Or is it personal preference?
I have just started learning, and am having a wonderful time.
Thanks for the help.

It's a matter of personal preference, based on the whistle you are using and the tune. Most whistles sound better with oxxxxx because you don't have to blow quite as hard. With a faster tune, sometimes xxxxxx works better because of the surrounding notes.

Definitely depends on the whistle. Some of my whistles sound just fine with xxxxxx, but others need oxxxxx.
If I'm playing something slow I mostly stick with oxxxxx as a general rule because it sounds better to me personally. I also use oxxxxx when D is a particularly important note. But otherwise I just use xxxxxx because I find it easier.

Tell us something.: I've like been here forever ;)
But I guess you gotta filter out the spambots.

I use either, just depending on the fingering of the tune. Sometimes OXXXXX is eaiser to hit, and sometimes XXXXXX is easier, depending on what's before and/or after the D.

fwiw, I always use xxxxxx for high D.

On almost every whistle I have, for D at the top of the second register, I use oxxooo. This is a common fingering for C-natural in the first octave, but in the second octave, frequently renders a spot-on D.
