Positively Testcard on the radio

Post by thewesleyan »

Great kwela sound! Go to <a href=http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/comedy/loos ... html>Loose Ends</a> and click on "Listen again". (You need 'Real Player') Come back after about 30 minutes when they make their appearance.
This should work until next Saturday.

Clicking "Listen Again" brings up an archive of old shows: which one has the Testcard? Is this a new show, or the one that was aired a few weeks ago? That was pretty good. I am a major Testcard fan.
Got wood?

Sorry!
I should have said 'click "Hear the latest Show" ' It was broadcast last night, so it should be up all of this week. You have to wait until almost the end of the show, and they only play one item - but it is worth the wait.

Nice stuff, thanks! No need to wait 30 minutes, just drag the little round button on the slide bar to about 31 minutes. Here's a direct link:

Stumbled on this driving home through some of the best scenery in Wales...and it was sunny :) . Great stuff.

I wish I'd realised that - I can't stand Ned Sherrin.

Tell us something.: I've been playing whistle for a very long time, but never seem to get any better than I was about 10 years ago. I'm okay with that. :)

What kind of whistle(s) do they use? Do they play them with the mouthpiece way inside the mouth like old-time Kwela folks did?

I'll have to order one of their recordings...good stuff. The only Kwela CD I have now is "King Kwela" by Spokes M. and I've about worn it out.

What kind of guitar do they use in Kwela? Is it full-sized or more of a baritone ukulele kinda thing?

I think they use Shaw whistles. I wouldn't know about the guitar.

Yes he does use Shaw whistles (pretty much exclusively, though he carries a couple of cheapies around).

And yes he holds it at a neck-crunching angle, partially fitted into his mouth in an authentic Kwela styley way.
They are a complete blast to see - if you ever get the chance I recommend it - absolutely infectious music.
