Tell us something.: Been a fluter, citternist, and uilleann piper; committed now to the way of the harp.

Oh, yeah: also a mod here, not a spammer. A matter of opinion, perhaps.

I suspect I don't need to tell you this, but I was referencing a tune by the same name (composed by Joe Zawinul) that Adderley was known for performing. On a further note, the exclamation "Mercy!" covers a lot of ground in the States; it can even be an utterance of praise, as I intended here - suggesting something's so good that it's almost stupefying. I might say "Mercy" when tucking into something really tasty, for example, and it would be a sincere and heartfelt compliment to the cook. It's more a feature of Southern US English, but that's never stopped me. :)

Of course I could also say it when encountering a bad smell or a disaster; it's all about context. I suppose the shortest answer is that it's like a verbal exclamation point. A Northern equivalent would be "Holy Moley/Buckets/Cow/[your blue word of choice]", but I think "Mercy" is rather a bit more genteel. When saying it as an exclamation, the lower your pitch, the better.

Don't know if I'm belaboring the obvious, but I thought a learning moment in dialect might be in order just in case.
