It was a lover andhis lass,
With a hey and a ho
and a hey nonny no.
That oer the sweet green fields
did pass
In springtime, in springtime
The only perfect ring time
When birds do sing.
Sing ring a ding a ding
Sing ring a ding a ding
Sing ring a ding a ding
True lovers love the spring.
Bill Shakespeare and Frank Sinatra.
(i probably made some mistakes,
and am happy to be corrected)
Hamlet in April
I would not praise your legs as fine
Had I not something more in mind,
For it is spring!
The virtue sought
has melted off with winter's melt.
My thought has drained as down
an iron tub
And nothing is as it would seem.
To sleep, perchance to rub,
Ah, there's the dream!
me 1960 apologies for lewdness but
that's spring.

and a hey nonny no.

did pass
In springtime, in springtime

Does any one of you folks still do the spring cleaning thing?
I am not talking your standard cleaning I mean the deep down stuff.
The turning the house inside out stuff.
The torching and flaming and gutting out the house stuff... ok I am getting a little extreme here.
I love spring... but I certainly dread the chore.
Yes, I am still thrilled about the change of season. But there's something nice about winter, it meant more whistle playing time for me.
I am looking forward to the spring flowers. The trees all in bloom! The allergies...ah who cares! (Allergies are not gonna get me down!) And back to teaching the out-door education! Yahoo!

I don't care about the start of spring per se. Meteorological spring (March1-June1) is my favorite time of year, though; it's the days getting longer. During winter, I go to work in the dark and come home in the dark. Blech. If there's one day of the year that stands out for me, it's the beginning of daylight savings time. An extra hour of daylight after work when it counts.

This is a very hemisphere-centric thread. For our friends in the southern hemisphere, notably Australia and New Zealand, autumn is just starting. (They don't call it fall, and anyway gum trees are not deciduous.)
Speaking of hemispheres, something strange has been happening to this word. Americans (or at least American politicians) have started to use it to mean North and South America, and even to talk about the "western hemisphere" to mean the same part of the globe.
I just cannot understand this. If you want to cut the globe into two, the equator is an obvious place, giving two equal hemispheres. But where on earth (ho ho) do you make the cut into east and west?
Is this not a regrettable distortion of the sense of this venerable word? Or am I missing something?
This enquiring mind wants to know...
[Edited to add the "politicians" qualifier.]

Kari (and others with rain, cold, and snow), I'll be sending warm thoughts your way as I enjoy the first day of spring here in Atlanta-- we have a gorgeous blue-skied day with an expected high of 75.

well yesterday in the wonderful city of Boston we had snow- and then rain- and then yacky mush on the ground....
my Dad called me up and crowed about the beautiful 75 degree day in Los Angeles-
I want spring! I want to actually be able to wear a real spring dress rather then my heavy woolen dress for easter mass this year..
