Jomac -I learned the tune Mouse in the Mug a couple of weeks ago, great tune. I had never heard of it before then. Some friends and I do a group whistle lesson here in L.A., and that tune is awfully popular now! lol

Hey! Did someone say Planxty?? If you don't have Cold Blow and the Rainy Night, get it. It's got a ton of great whistle-friendly tunes. Get a Bflat whistle to play along with "P Stands for Paddy."
My clip of Frost is all Over/Gander in the Pratie Hole I learned from that cd. (Jigs on Clips and Snips)
Edit: Forgot to mention current favorite: 3 "Kerry Slides" from Chieftains5. I'll post those soon.
Tony

I can't stop playing Boys of the Town, a nice little jig. Turlach Boylan starts off his CD "The Tidy Cottage" with this tune.

Being a rank beginner, single Mom, and employed full time, I choose something nice, simple, slow, and relaxing...Crested Hens, by way of Solas mutilation, as well as a local band, Sigean...Such a beautiful melody!

If I ever manage to finish the low D I'm trying to make, I'll be even happier playing this one. I just love those low tones!

I'm playing whistle for our Christmas Revelry at church in a few weeks so I'm concentrating on that stuff right now, a little of everything,- Personet Hodie, Gower Wassail, Lord of the Dance, Christ Child Lullaby(Low D for this one) etc. About 20 tunes in all.
As for other whistle tunes- I'm trying to get Give Me Your Hand on Low D(my new toy that I really love!

Holiday tunes I'm learning about 20 tunes but these are my favorites
  • Reg-D: We wish you a merry christmas.
  • Low-D: I'm dreaming of a White Christmas
  • Low-D: O Come, O Come Emmanuel.
Celtic tunes I'm playing a lot:
Reg-D: Red Haired Boy (Little Beggerman)
Low-D: (Can't decide between the following)
  • The Black Cat (by Lothlorien)
  • The Fair Maid of Wicklow.
  • Coinnleach Glas an Fhomhair(Stubble Fields of Autumn)
  • Pe'n Eirinn I (Whoe'er in Ireland is she)
  • Eamonn a' Chnoic (Ned of the Hills)
  • Tabhair dom do Lamh (Give Me Your Hand)
I often practice Ned followed by Fair Maid as a set.

Tell us something.: You just slip out the back, Jack
Make a new plan, Stan
You don't need to be coy, Roy
Just get yourself free
Hop on the bus, Gus
You don't need to discuss much
Just drop off the key, Lee
And get yourself free

For the last couple of months it was Hector the Hero.

This month it's Bruno, from the Flook Flatfish CD.

Some friends and I are currently working on "Bygone Days", of which there is a beautiful version on Eileen Ivers' CD.

Other favorites include Kesh Jig, Sheebag Sheemore, Ships Are Sailing, and The Immigrant (on Joanie's Madden's Songs of the Irish Whistle CD).

I'm learning O'Keeffe's Slide from a recording my teacher made for me. After 4 plus years of playing whistle, this is the first tune I've learned completely by ear. I'm loving it!

currently I'm working on a few x-mas tunes and George Brazibon, the kesh and WOI.
My wife loves Tooraloora, I know most consider it a green beer tune but since she is so tolerant of my whistle aberation I decided to learn it for her. Looked all over and couldn't find sheet music so I figured it out by ear. It is the first tune I have figured out by ear so I am pretty fond of it now too.

Martin,
Perhaps the "Cat got sick in the corner" because he ate the "Mouse in The Mug"? Lord knows what was in that mug before the mouse finished it off.

lawhistle: Where do you do this group whistle lesson? I'd love to join! Do you attend the Monday night sessions at the Celtic Art Center? I just started to.
