- Tell us something.: I'm a fiddler and, latterly, a fluter. I love the flute. I wish I'd always played it. I love the whistle as well. I'm blessed in having really lovely instruments for all of my musical interests.

This is a duduk. Beautiful, isn't it? Now I want one as well.

Re: I'm confoosed
There are some similarities in the fingering of duduks and whistles, I think... same method of getting half notes... duduks arent played with the fingertips but rather with the fingers splayed across the holes and rolled off slightly for halfnotes... there's a series of lessons on youtube somewhere.benhall.1 wrote:This is a duduk. I'll say, it's different. Not for me. Just different. I was never into listening to a choir of Ducks (or any other choirs for that matter).

Without meaning to sound like I'm bashing the instrument, I gotta ask, why do players of duduk act like a horse that's had a suger cube shoved between its bottom lip and gum? What's with this trying to eat the instrument? What are they doing, tonally?

The vibrato effect is caused in part by quivering the lower lip.Mick Down Under wrote:Without meaning to sound like I'm bashing the instrument, I gotta ask, why do players of duduk act like a horse that's had a suger cube shoved between its bottom lip and gum? Well, being down there at the bottom and such, everything else kinda DOES revolve around Australia.caedmon wrote:Don't let Australian's hear you say that.mutepointe wrote:Not everything revolves around Australia
(and from satellite photos I think you can even see the resulting scuff marks.)

Re: I'm confoosed
to the original poster...
be aware that there are 2 types of duduk. 1, the one in all these clips, armenian, is a double reeded instrument and will not be easy to pick up without lessons or prior experience playing something like an oboe or bassoon.
there is also a balkan/bulgarian duduk that is more similar to a tin whistle, end blown, with 6 holes. i have one of these with a 2 note chanting pipe. it sounds very nice and woody, like a good recorder, but not at ALL like a traditional reeded duduk.
just wanted to clarify before you spent 60-100.00 on one, and expected it to sound like those recordings that have been posted.

Re: I'm confoosed
Love those there Duduks! I listened two three youtube clips, the haunting Yanni one, the crazy jazz chic, and the Engima "Sadness" clip.
I notice the players seem like they are really blowing hard - like a trumpet almost. Would this be because they are a reeded instrument?
